Exclamation Jim's Tips #1: One-handed Launcher operation

True one-handed Launcher operation:

I personally don't like the default CLIE Launcher, and while I have settled on LauncherX as a replacement, you may not need to go out and spend money on a new launcher. I tried to like Sony's new Clie launcher, but it seems to take way too many jog dial turns to find and select a program, and I find it hard to navigate from category to category using the jog dial--it really requires stylus tapping. I REALLY am stuck on the Launcher iii, Launch'em, LauncherX style of launchers. So, what to do? Why not go back to the "Classic" style!

This is a simple matter to do. Go into Options menu and select "Go To Standard view". Now, your launcher looks more familiar.

OK, what about categories? You still have to use the stylus to tap on the drop-down, right? Nope. You can access apps and categories in one of two ways:

1. By default, pressing the Jog Dial button advances you to the next category. rolling the Jog dial moves you through the apps, and pressing the Jog Dial on a selected app launches the app. Pressing "Back" allows you to move through categories by pressing the Jog Dial again.

2. You can also select categories as above, but you can also cause the launcher to display all available apps in a "PopUp" menu for selection. Go into "Options" and click "Preferences" and check all boxes and change the "Jog Select" dropdown to "PopUp". Now, when you scroll the Jog Dial, a PopUp list of available apps for that category pops up. You just scroll to the selected app and press the jog Dial to launch it or press "Back" to dismiss the popup.

Finally, edit the categories and rename them to whatever you want, and use the "Categories" menu item to assign categories.

OK, what does this give you?

Pressing the jog dial cycles you through the categories in the order that the categories are sorted (see bonus tip below to sort otherwise unsortable categories.) The "Unfiled" category is ignored, which is nice because it allows you to "hide" unused or infrequently used programs. Rolling the jog dial brings up a popup list of all apps in that category through which you can scroll and select. Pressing the jog dial on the selected entry in the popup starts the app. Is the popup displayed, but you want to go change categories? Press the "Back" button and it will dismiss the popup allowing you to then press the jog dial to cycle the categories.

Also, pressing and holding "Back" from within any application takes you back to the launcher.

Bonus tip:
Don't like the way the categories are sorted? Rename the categories by prepending numbers to the names. For example, "Main" becomes "1. Main", "Games" becomes "2. Games", etc. Adjust the numbers to your liking, and you can determine the sort order!

It's not perfect, but I can actually select any app from within any category with just a couple jogs and presses.

Clie Launcher

Use of the Back button really eases the use of Clie Launcher. Use it to switch the Jog Dial from the Apps list to the Launcher Group (read: Category) window.

When you have scrolled to the group you desire, pressing the Jog Dial switches to the Apps Lists. Jog down to the app you desire and press the Jog Dial to launch it. Also, limiting the number of groups makes the Launcher work easier, and turning off the animation can speed things up slightly.

I really like the Favorites List, which makes the whole thing work better for me. I also like the ability to drop and drag to organize. I use it a lot. I also use Jim's hint on naming for my groups to organize them, and Clie allows you to put the Apps in any order you wish.
