New IM Palm Apps - Chatopus and TIPICme

Two new IM Jabber based clients for Palm OS have been released. For those who don't know, Jabber is an open source IM implementation.

What's important though is that you can use other IM services such as AOL, MSN, AIM with Jabber through the use of 'Transports'.

To sign up to a Jabber server, go to www.jabber.org and look up Public Servers. If your lost picking a server from the list, I took the approach for the server name that looked the simplest ;p - I use myjabber.net personally. Then you install a client on your machine so you can sign up a Jabber account and set up the transports. Psi seems to be the most widely used one, but TipicIM would do the job as well.

Okay now you've registered your jabber account and set up the transports.

Two that's just been released from Beta is Chatopus v1.01 and TipicME. TipicME uses Java MIDP to run. And personally, TipicME's interface is god forsaken ugly (well.. at least not as bad as Verichat ;p). I recommend Chatopus. Very clean, and follows the KISS principal.

My opinion, I'm happy that finally, new IM software are being developed and are continuing to be developed, as opposed to archaic software such as Verichat.

Hey, omniphil setting for chatopus aren't obvious to set but i got it working ;

i've created j0@amessage.be with psi and set the msn and icq gateways on windows with psi - also tried exodus bvut psi is better i think -

then in chatopus, my account is setup like that
server adress : amessage.be
username : j0

This is confusing as in psi the username is "j0@amessage.be"...

Thanks! it works now, but me thinks its way to strange. I was hoping i didnt have to register verichat as it does not support widescreen. I really just want a widescreen chat client that connects to aol and msn without too much hassle...

i'd say chatopus is harder to set up but is really cheaper than verichat ; the different login in psi and chatopus is all but obvious to get

I followed and tested the betas, and was impressed by the background feature, which seemed to be such a hassle for verichat ; it was included in the 1st beta i've tested and is better implemented to my view, u can choose when to open the "popup"

I think we can expect really better support and updates from chatopus..no reasons to pay the verichat annual fee anymore

I'm still confused by the aol and msn support, i installed the gateways via psi, but on the palm side it dont really see anything usefull, i looks i have to add all my contacts for aol manually as well? ugh..

From the Chatopus website:

Portrait and landscape mode support

I don't have a Clie/Palm that supports landscape. Does Chatopus work well in landscape mode?

how are these IM apps compared to Verichat??

IMHO verichat is the best IM for palm so far...... apart from not letting the user changes his/her nickname in the program...

The following bugs are fixed,

Occasional connection problem with certain devices, including Treo 600.
Auto screen-off functionality fails to perform with certain devices, including PalmOne Tungsten T3.
To upgrade from a beta release, you must un-install Chatopus first.

Yes. Besides, Chatopus can also run in landscape mode in Tungsten T3 or the Tapwave.

Under landscape mode, messages are easier to read.

It also supports the virtual graffiti of the Tungsten T3 and other Sony devices.

With virtual graffit, a user can have a much larger view for viewing the online/offline contact list.

Chatopus has a lot of screenshots available at http://www.chatopus.com/screenshots/

Both Chatopus and Tipic uses the Jabber IM protocol, which is an open protocol and soon becoming an internet standard. They both allows a user to use any server that supports the Jabber/XMPP protocols.

Practically, a user can choose from a long list of public Jabber servers or even setup his own Jabber server from both open-source and/or commercial implementations.

With Verichat, a user is pretty much tied to a single vendor and being forced to use Verichat's own propertiary messaging systems and gateways.

Angry ChatOpus works?

I've installed ChatOpus on my Clie NX70-V. I've registered a jabber account using MirandaIM running under WinXP. Miranda imported my ICQ contact list very nicely (even if it did screw up the groups).

Chatopus seems to run fine, but when I try to connect, it gives me the error "Initialization Error (4688)".

I've tried everything I can think of but can't get this to work at all. Any suggestions? I'm running version 1.02.
